RADAR Vol 1: Red Clay
by Nydia Blas, Tim Davis, Maury Gortemiller, Forrest Gander, Laura Noel and Anderson Scott
Red Clay, the inaugural issue of RADAR, focuses on the American South, examining one of America's most unique, complicated regions. Each collection in the series brings together photographers whose individual photobooks combined take the reader on an exploration of a particular place, region or territory.
The 5 books of the artists, Nydia Blas, Tim Davis, Maury Gortemiller, Laura Noel, and Anderson Scott are joined by a chapbook of poetry by the Pulitzer Prize winning poet Forrest Gander. The artists and projects were selected with the guidance of Maury Gortemiller who served as the lead curator for the collection to insure both the range of vision about the south that Red Clay is seeking as well as a synergy between the artists and projects themselves.

“At first glance, the photographs in Gortemiller’s Do the Priest in Different Voices are hard to decipher – a mishmash of seemingly dissonant visual elements that form a surreal or Magical Realist image. This is work that comes out of left field – strange, disturbing and funny all at once. Yet, underneath the surface of Gortemiller’s hard-to-classify metaphysical photographs reside common themes central to art in the South: memory, mythology, family and place. In an age when photographic imagery is ever present, Gortemiller has managed an extraordinary feat by producing totally original photographs that resonate with honesty and authenticity.”
Richard McCabe in Do the Priest in Different Voices
